Exchange Homes

If you have an Assured or Secure Tenancy, you can swap your home with another tenant with one of these types of tenancy. This is your right to mutual exchange. Shelter defines clearly what a mutual exchange is.

To try and swap you need to register at www.homeswapper.co.uk.

Once you have found someone to swap with, you will both need to apply for permission and complete a mutual exchange form. Contact us and we will send you a mutual exchange form to complete.

You cannot swap until you have permission in writing from us. We have six weeks to consider your application.

We can only refuse permission for a mutual exchange on certain legal grounds. This includes:

  • you (or the person you are exchanging with) has a Possession Order/current Notice Seeking Possession/current Anti-Social Behaviour injunction/ or legal proceedings have begun
  • you (or the person you are exchanging with) work for your landlord and your home was provided in connection with your job
  • the home you (or the person you are exchanging with) want to move to is larger than your household needs
  • the home you (or the person you are exchanging with) want to move to is too small for your household and you would be overcrowded
  • the home you want to move to is provided to meet particular needs, and you don't have those needs (e.g. where a property is adapted for a person with a physical disability or accommodation that is designated as sheltered housing)

We may put a condition on the exchange being approved if any arrears need to be cleared before you move, or if a repair needs doing.
